For many years I carried this remarkable little recorder around with me wherever I went. It was a very valuable tool for listening to my own playing as often as possible as a way of improving my playing. The recordings below were all taken with this recorder. All the SSP ones were recorded at home, most of the GHB ones at the Altcar Army Cadet Training Camp near Formby during the time that Joe Massey was teaching the cadet pipe band there. Some of the tunes were recorded in the officers mess, others recorded outside on the parade ground.

GREAT HIGHLAND BAGPIPE

Pipe Major Joe Massey. 2/4 March. Written on Boxing Day 2013, after hearing of Joe's passing on Christmas Eve.
P/M Terry Slow Air. Composed by Joe Massey. Harmony by myself. This is a multi-track recording made on my pipes in my kitchen in about half an hour. First I recorded the melody. Then I recorded the harmony while playing the recording back through headphones. Then I used a wave editor on my computer to put the two tracks together. In the second half of the track I used the chorus facility on the wave editor to produce a virtual pipe corps playing the tune and harmony together. Quite an interesting exercise!
Salute to Pipe Major Evan MacRae Piobaireachd. Composed by Joe Massey. Evan MacRae ended his military career as Pipe Major of the Liverpool Scottish in the mid-1960s. During this time Joe Massey was his Pipe Sergeant and learned a great deal of piobaireachd from him.
